Disease That Can Spread From Dogs To Humans Discovered In Iowa

Iowa has confirmed multiple cases of a disease that can be transmitted from dogs to humans and can pose numerous health risks ranging from fever to exhaustion and inflammation of lymph nodes.

State veterinarian Dr. Jeff Kaisand said canine brucellosis appeared to have originated from a small dog commercial breeding facility in Marion County.

The affected dogs are quarantined and being tested. While the threat to humans is fairly low, anyone who comes into contact with blood, tissue, and fluids during the birthing process of infected dogs should contact their doctor immediately.

The department recommends that those who believe they might have come in contact with an infected or exposed dog, visit their primary care physician. And if humans eat undercooked or raw meat from those infected animals-or if they consume unpasteurized milk, ice cream, butter, or cheese-they can also get sick, notes the Mayo Clinic.

Iowa Department of Agriculture officials said it's always important to practice good biosecurity, such as thoroughly washing your hands after handling animals.

In dogs, the disease causes reproductive issues, such as abortions, infertility, or stillbirths. This bacterial infection is highly contagious between dogs.

The rescue said their shelter building is closed for the next 30 days and warned those who have bought dogs from breeders in Iowa to test for brucellosis.

In the post, AHeinz57 said it had purchases 32 dogs at an auction. In people, Canine brucellosis manifests as fever, headache, chills, sweats, weakness, depression and pain in joints, muscle and the back.

While brucellosis usually affects dogs, other animals can also develop the disease, including cattle, sheep, goats, camels, pigs, reindeer, and wild boar.

Health officials say the disease is most commonly reported in breeding facilities, where staff are trained to recognize and test for it. It may take a few weeks to several months for the infection to be cured, depending on severity of illness and the timing of treatment.
