Senate Intelligence Committee subpoenas Donald Trump Jr. in Russian Federation probe

The U.S. Senate Intelligence Committee has subpoenaed one of the president's sons, Donald Trump Jr., to answer questions about his contacts with Russian Federation, two congressional sources said on Wednesday.

The summons was a sign that the investigations of the Congress were not completed to an alleged interference of the U.S. presidential election in 2016 by Russian Federation, although special investigator Robert Mueller has already submitted the end of March, its final report, the Portal.

The reported congressional subpoena is the first to hit a member of the president's family.

A Senate Intelligence Committee spokeswoman declined to discuss details of its long-running investigation into allegations of Russian meddling in the 2016 USA presidential election.

Trump Jr. declined to speak voluntarily to Mueller, according to the Mueller report, and the special counsel did not seek to subpoena him. Multiple Republicans had coalesced around Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell's talking point of "case closed" in recent days, but now Democrats can argue that even members of the President's own party don't agree that all Russian Federation inquiries should end immediately.

The White House so far has been adamant in shielding current and former administration officials from an avalanche of subpoenas coming from the House Democrats, with President Trump vowing to "fight all the subpoenas" last month. Trump Jr. and his brother Eric are overseeing the president's Trump Organization business empire while Trump is in office. The Senate Judiciary Committee released the transcript publicly.

Trump Jr. did not address the subpoena on Twitter immediately after the reports emerged.

But concerns about Trump Jr.'s statements are potentially more problematic for the president. Cohen told Mueller's team that it appeared the two had discussed the subject before.
