Trump 'surprised' by Senate subpoena of his son Trump Jr

She said that Trump Jr. testified for many hours a year ago before the Senate Intelligence Committee, which issued the subpoena Thursday.

The 41-year-old Don Jr testified voluntarily in private once to the committee, and was peppered with questions about a June 9, 2016 meeting in Trump Tower in NY that he and other senior Trump campaign officials had with a Russian lawyer offering dirt on Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.

White House chief of staff Mick Mulvaney said he received no advanced word from Republicans that Trump Jr. would be subpoenaed, calling the lack of notice "bad form". "The Mueller Report cleared @DonaldJTrumpJr and he's already spent 27 hours testifying before Congress", tweeted Burr's fellow North Carolina Republican, Sen. "My son was totally exonerated by Mueller, who frankly does not like Donald Trump - me, this Donald Trump", he said. But former Trump attorney Michael Cohen, who pleaded guilty to lying to Congress, and who reported to a federal prison in NY earlier this week to begin serving a three-year sentence for tax and bank fraud, stated he briefed Trump family members on the Moscow tower project that never materialized "approximately 10" times. Trump Jr. told the Senate Judiciary Committee in 2017 he was only "peripherally aware" of the proposal. Emails leading up to the meeting promised dirt on Hillary Clinton.

Finally, there was the president himself, who stated he was "very surprised" to learn of the subpoena.

The special counsel's report on Russian Federation and the 2016 election notes some contradictions in what Trump Jr. told the Senate committee and what some witnesses told special counsel investigators.

Cohen reported to federal prison this week to start a three-year sentence for crimes including tax evasion and campaign finance violations related to hush-money payments made to protect his former boss. John Cornyn (R-TX)-the former number two in Senate GOP leadership-did not stand by the subpoena and instead called for the committee to formally end its investigation once and for all.

Trump noted that other Republicans were upset that the chairman, Sen.

"This is a genuinely baffling story", she said.

Trump took to Twitter to rail about Mueller's two-year investigation. The panel is expected to try to call in several witnesses as it winds up its investigation over the next several months.

The pain raining down upon Burr come not just from the Senate; House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy criticized the rogue subpoena, as did House Intelligence Committee ranking member Rep. Devin Nunes (R-CA) and Rep. Secondly, McConnell did not say that he agrees with Burr's decision to issue the subpoena.

The Virginia Democrat said the intelligence panel also wants to see the underlying evidence in Mueller's report, a request that House lawmakers have also made. The president now claims executive privilege over that material.

Warner said his panel knew about "90 to 95 percent" of the Russian contacts mentioned in Mueller's report, and in other areas the committee had "much more extensive" information.
