Your Uber Is Not Here: Drivers Strike, Rally Nationwide Ahead Of IPO

San Diegans may have a hard time trying to catch a ride through Uber or Lyft Wednesday, as drivers in San Diego and across the nation are taking part in a strike for better wages.

Lyft said Tuesday its loss in the past quarter widened to $1.1 billion in the ride-hailing giant's first financial report as a public company, as it announced it was teaming up with former Google auto unit Waymo on autonomous taxis.

Uber spokeswoman Caroline Wellford said in a statement that the company would continue working to improve the driver experience.

In a tweet, the Rideshare Co-operative showed how Uber used surge-pricing incentives to lure drivers in Sydney to work today in order to counter-balance striking drivers.

"Drivers are at the heart of our service - we can't succeed without them - and thousands of people come into work at Uber every day focused on how to make their experience better, on and off the road".

How will US sanctions on crude oil from Iran affect India?
Oil prices stabilised on Wednesday as markets remained relatively tight amid USA sanctions on crude exporters Iran and Venezuela .

The inquiry will table a report on the matter later this year. "Groups of drivers in Chicago, Philadelphia, and Washington, D.C., among other cities, will hold rallies in solidarity with drivers around the country".

But there appears to be no easy way to satisfy both drivers' calls for higher wages, and investors' demands that Uber eventually make money.

Lyft drivers´ hourly earnings have increased over the past two years and surpassed $10 billion, the company said in a statement.

However the issue could worsen after Uber investors, and executives, convert their rich-on-paper status to rich-in-the-real-world when the company goes public. Uber hopes to raise $9 billion and is expected to be valued at up to $91.5 billion.

Nevertheless, the new European Union decision rules and Uber's pushback against them indicate two things as Uber prepares to go public: there remain legal and regulatory challenges to the employment arrangement at the heart of Uber's business, and Uber remains firmly dug in on its stance. "I stand with the Uber and Lyft drivers going on strike on May 8".

‘Avengers: Endgame’ Becomes Second-Biggest Movie Ever Internationally
It seems like Avengers: Endgame is just too much of a draw for audiences to see much of anything else. But it remains to be seen if Avengers: Endgame will have the legs to take it down.

It's hard to pin down the percentage of ride fares that Uber takes because the company changed the structure for paying drivers in 2017.

These companies depend on a large pool of cheap labor to sustain that growth, but, as evidenced by the fact that hundreds of drivers will strike on Wednesday, workers don't feel that their role in the company's growth is being adequately recognized or compensated.

But the IPO won't be life-changing for most drivers, whom Uber insists are independent contractors, not employees.

The Boston Independent Drivers Guild is calling on drivers to gather outside an Uber office in Saugus to protest on Wednesday afternoon. Drivers in Los Angeles, San Diego, and Boston will stage 24-hour long strikes from their ride-sharing apps, those in Atlanta and San Francisco will strike for 12 hours, and New York City-based drivers will strike for two hours during morning rush hour.

The hours drivers plan to strike vary by location but will span from NY to Atlanta to Tokyo. Lyft introduced free bank accounts and discounts on vehicle rentals and maintenance for drivers; Uber's new Uber Pro program offers drivers free online education at ASU and cash-back options on gas. In settling the California and MA case, it agree to make changes to how it removes drivers from its platform. Protests are reportedly expected in at least eight USA cities, including Chicago, Boston and Philadelphia.
