While the language was largely the same as earlier, the State Department warned of "arbitrary enforcement of local laws", sudden prohibitions on exiting the country and harassment of USA citizens of Chinese heritage.

Chinese government officials are saying it's not "convenient" to discuss the alleged national security threats - this while the Huawei CFO is treated like royalty here in comparison.

The United States warned its citizens Thursday they could face arbitrary action by authorities when they visit China, following the detention of a number of Canadians.

"Chinese authorities have asserted broad authority to prohibit USA citizens from leaving China by using 'exit bans, ' sometimes keeping US citizens in China for years".

China on Friday rebutted a U.S.travel advisory that urges American nationals to "exercise increased caution" when travelling in the Communist Party-ruled country.

The two were detained after Canadian police arrested Huawei Technologies Co Ltd's chief financial officer Meng Wanzhou on December 1 in Vancouver, at the request of the United States.

The move also comes amidst the arrest of the CFO of Huawei in Canada, who now faces extradition to the U.S. amid fraud charges. Under Chinese criminal procedure law, special forms of detention and interrogation can be used for state security suspects.

US prosecutors have accused her of misleading banks about transactions linked to Iran, putting the banks at risk of violating USA sanctions. Diplomatic tension between Canada and China has intensified since Meng's arrest on December 1.

The Chinese government has only given vague details about the detention of the two Canadians, and it has not drawn a direct link to Meng's arrest. U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has also called for their release, and the UK, EU, Australia, France, and Germany have all issued statements voicing concern over the detentions. On Thursday, China's top prosecutor said they had "without a doubt" violated the law.
