Conway defends Trump's comments about child migrant deaths

Outgoing White House chief John Kelly said in an interview published Sunday that he had "nothing but compassion" for undocumented migrants crossing into the U.S., and undercut President Donald Trump's claims to be building a "wall" at the Mexico border.

Speaking of the wall, Gen. Kelly said that after consultation with border patrol agents it became clear that a continuous, opaque structure would not be suitable for stemming the flow of illegal immigrants. "They can't. If we had a Wall, they wouldn't even try!" he said.

Without mentioning Kelly directly, Mr. Trump - who has lately suggested the wall could be fencing or "steel slats", claimed a concrete wall was "NEVER ABANDONED".

With a Democrat-controlled House and a Senate that was only able to pick up two seats, Trump's dreams of $5 billion in border security funding is looking unlikely.

The high-stakes move to reopen the government will be the first big battle between Trump and Pelosi as Democrats come into control ready to reassert the power of the legislative branch and confront the White House. He just tweeted Sunday that a "ten-foot wall" around Barack and Michelle's Obama's home is what he has in mind for the entire southern border.

Roger Federer beats Cameron Norrie at Hopman Cup
In an escalating argument , she called him a " thief " and accused him of stealing a point from her. At the Hopman Cup, eight teams representing their nations compete in a round-robin format .

A former Marine general who led the military command responsible for Latin America, Kelly was Trump's Homeland Security secretary before becoming White House chief of staff in July a year ago.

Under the terms Graham sketched out Sunday, young undocumented immigrants who arrived in the U.S.as children, as well as those fleeing disaster- and war-torn countries who hold indefinite visas, could be temporarily protected from deportation in return for wall funding.

The six bills to fund the other departments have bipartisan support in both chambers but have been held up over the dispute over funding Trump's wall. "But always saying "wall" or "no wall" is being very disingenuous and turning a complete blind eye to what is a crisis at the border when it comes to the drugs pouring in".

Graham had also gone to the White House to complain about Trump's abrupt decision to declare victory over ISIS and withdraw USA troops from Syria.

"I campaigned on Border Security, which you can not have without a strong and powerful Wall", he said.

8-Year-Old Dies in Hospital After Illegally Crossing Border into US
Alonzo was the second Guatemalan child to die in CBP custody this month after Jakelin Caal , a 7-year-old girl, died December 8. It was just six days after he and his father, Agustin Gomez, 47, crossed into the United States without legal documentation.

A turbulent year is coming to a close in Washington with the 10th day of a partial federal government shutdown and no signs of progress toward a spending deal that President Donald Trump would be willing to sign.

"Democrats are united against the President's immoral, ineffective and expensive wall - the wall that he specifically promised that Mexico would pay for", Drew Hammill, a Pelosi spokesman, said in an emailed statement. It's improved technology for surveillance and "steel slat" barriers which Trump decided was the policy after talking extensively with law enforcement.

After meeting with the president, Graham said Trump was "open-minded" about a broader immigration agreement, saying the impasse presented an opportunity to address issues beyond the border wall. A recent poll conducted by Reuters indicated that President Trump is bearing the brunt of the blame with the public for the shutdown; however, the three most recent government shutdowns appear to have not been major factors in the 2010, 2014, and 2018 elections.

Trump has taken digs at Conway, calling him "Mr. Kellyanne Conway", but the conservative lawyer hasn't relented in his insults.

It isn't the longest shutdown in history, but it does affect the income of several hundred thousand federal employees.
