The 25-year-old, who came 10th overall, received 25 votes in total, with Kenya picking the England captain 2nd, Uzbekistan and Togo 3rd, Mongolia and Bosnia Herzegovina 4th, then Croatia, Kingdom of Lesotho, Mauritania, Malta, and Sri Lanka backed him in 5th.

Modric, 33, was announced as the victor of the prestigious prize in a glitzy ceremony held in Paris at the Grand Palais, just off the Champs Elysees.

Other honourees on the night included Mbappe, who took home the first-ever Raymond Kopa Trophy given to the top under-21 player.
