Mueller: Manafort has lied to Federal Bureau of Investigation, special counsel's office since plea deal

There are so many takeaways from special counsel Robert Mueller's allegation that former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort has lied time and again to FBI investigators, even after Manafort reached a plea agreement that clearly stipulated what cooperation would entail.

As prosecutors accused Manafort of lying, George Papadopoulos - the former Trump campaign aide whose Russian Federation contacts set off the collusion investigation - entered a minimum security unit to start serving out his two-week jail sentence at the Oxford, Wisconsin federal prison.

"He believes he has provided truthful information and does not agree with the government's characterisation or that he has breached the agreement", his lawyers said. President Trump has consistently and repeatedly denied any wrongdoing.

The special counsel's office says it will provide more details at a later date.

But federal prosecutors on Monday said he violated the pact and asked a judge to sentence him.

Even though Mueller's team alleges he's breached his plea agreement, Manafort must comply with the prosecutors' demands going forward.

Manafort had been meeting with the special counsel's office since he pleaded guilty in September and agreed to cooperate.

In the same joint status report filing, Manafort's legal team pushed back against the government's assertion.

Manafort's lies, which are not specified in the complaint, nullify all the promises federal prosecutors made to him as part of the plea agreement he reached two months ago in the investigation over Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election, Mueller's complaint argues.

One way of looking at the Manafort news is that it presents a major opportunity for the special counsel to speak on a number of aspects of the investigation through a court filing - something that Mueller has already been doing.

Prosecutors did not elaborate on areas where they contend that Manafort lied. Except for one aspect of their bank fraud case, in which Manafort appeared to dangle access to the Trump campaign in exchange for a bank loan, the cases did not publicly describe Manafort's work as campaign chairman.

Manafort has been held in a detention centre in Virginia since June.

"Manafort met with the government on numerous occasions and answered the government's questions", the report said, citing the former chairman. He'll be sentenced in February in his criminal case in Virginia, which he took to trial and lost.

The judge in DC District Court who received the update Monday night has not yet weighed in, and a sentencing for Manafort's guilty plea has not yet been scheduled.
