MA politicians have reacted with horror and condemnation to the photos of migrant women and children fleeing from tear gas fired by US border agents near Tijuana, Mexico, on Sunday.
Many of those in Tijuana have said they will wait there until they can seek asylum. However, proponents of stricter immigration laws say that the asylum system is being abused by migrants, such as the people traveling in the recent caravans.
In rare criticism of the migrants, Mexico's National Human Rights Commission said it "reiterates that members of the caravans that cross our country should respect Mexican laws and not engage in actions that affect the communities they pass through".
"We're here with broken hearts and hopes", said Andy Colon, a 20-year-old woman who travelled from Honduras with her sister and two children.
The clash between the migrant caravan and USA authorities along the Mexican border in recent days highlights a contentious topic in the immigration debate: asylum laws.
