Gunmen storm Chinese Consulate in Karachi killing two police officers


Schools in the area were placed on lockdown.

Following the attack, China asked Pakistan to beef up security at the mission.

The BLA spokesperson blamed China for "exploiting" the nation's "resources".

Prime Minister Imran Khan said Friday's attack would not undermine the Pakistan-China relationship, which he described as "mightier than Himalayas and deeper than Arabian Sea".

"India strongly condemns the terrorist attack on the Chinese Consulate in Karachi this morning".

The attackers stormed the consulate shortly after 9 a.m., during business hours.

Multiple gunmen tried to enter the consulate in the southern port city, but were intercepted by guards at a checkpoint, senior local police official Javaid Alam Odho told AFP.

"A high alert has been issued and more security personnel deployed at Iranian and Afghan consulates in Quetta and other important places", said Quetta police chief Abdul Razzar Cheema.

Local television showed thick black smoke billowing from a building as police counter terrorist teams advanced. Because of the quick response of police and guards, the terrorists couldn't reach the diplomats, he said, adding that the operation has been completed, but a search was still underway to see if there were any other suspects.

One attacker was also killed in the process and a suicide jacket and weapons were recovered from his possession.

Three to four attackers were involved in the assault, according to journalist Amir Latif, from Turkey's Anadolu News Agency. He blamed the "enemy of Pakistan" for the attack.

The Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) insurgent group claimed responsibility for the attack. The two states have engaged in several major investment projects.
