State and city leaders, including Utah Republican Rep. Mia Love and GOP Lt. Gov. Spencer Cox, praised Taylor's service and courage Saturday night on social media, as his constituents posted their remembrances of a mayor who was always available to them.

The Salt Lake Tribune and other media reported on November 3 that North Ogden Mayor Brent Taylor was serving with the National Guard when he was killed earlier in the day.

He was a military intelligence officer with Joint Force Headquarters and was expected to return to his mayoral job in January.

The Department of Defense identified the US servicemember killed in Afghanistan in an insider attack Saturday as Maj.

"He approached everything and everyone with the idea that he would leave them better than he found them", said Jonathon Call, a North Ogden resident now deployed to Kuwait with the Utah National Guard. "It's bitter because he was with folks he was helping. and that's what is ultimately so painful about this". That's what's so painful about this.

In August, a State Department official said that the U.S. was doing "everything we can" to bring the Taliban and the Afghan government to the table.

Despite the danger of the area, he thinks Taylor felt "he was among friends with the people that he was working with", adding to the anguish over the turn of events.

RS said in a statement that initial reports indicate the attacker was a member of the Afghan National Defense and Security Forces.

He and his wife Jennie have seven children. His remains are scheduled to arrive at Dover Air Force Base in DE on Monday evening.

"The sacrifices of you and so many of your comrades", Taylor said, "have made it possible for America to be a source of light, scientific growth, and human progress throughout its entire history". He was a leader.

"Brent was a hero, a patriot, a wonderful father, and a dear friend", Sen. Orrin Hatch of Utah said on Twitter.

Meanwhile, civilian deaths in Afghanistan keep rising. My prayers and love are with Jennie and his seven young children. The wounded service member is undergoing medical treatment and is in stable condition.

"Right now there is a need for my experience and skills to serve in our nation's long-lasting war in Afghanistan", Taylor wrote.

Taylor was a member of an advisory team that was training members of the Afghan commado team on combat operations. When he deployed in January, several hundred North Ogden residents lined the streets to wish him a fond farewell, not knowing that they would never see their mayor again.
