The celebration of Columbus Day, held on the second Monday of every October, has become growingly contested in recent years, with more USA cities choosing to honor the nation's indigenous people with their own day, which has been recognized by the United Nations since 1994.

Monday's ceremony included native songs by the Bad River Singers, spiritual offerings, an "Indigenous Peoples Day" proclamation read by Champaign Mayor Deb Feinen and Urbana Mayor Diane Marlin, and the ceremonial planting of a sugar maple near the ACES library.
"It's important for all of us to truly understand the people who came before us", Jones said, adding the campus is committed to putting native people "at the core of our educational efforts". And it's really kind of unfair because for us, it's really an Italian tradition.
