The US secretary of state and his Chinese counterpart exchanged acrimonious remarks at a meeting in Beijing today as they sought to apportion blame for a rapid deterioration in relations between the two superpowers. He also urged the administration to stop selling arms to neighboring Taiwan, which China views as its territory.

The Trump administration last month hit China with tariffs on $200 billion worth of Chinese products, and Beijing retaliated by imposing tariffs on $60 billion worth of United States goods.

Mike Pompeo, the US secretary of state, made the announcement after a Sunday meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

A US official told reporters traveling with Pompeo that the visit to North Korea was "better than" Pompeo's fraught previous trip to the North Korean capital in July, while adding there was a "long haul" ahead.

Mike Pompeo said North Korea and the USA are getting "pretty close" to agreeing on terms for their second summit.

North Korea claims to have destroyed the site.

"While the United States side has constantly escalated trade frictions with China, it has also taken actions regarding Taiwan that harm China's core interests", Wang said.

The South Koreans said the US and North Korea discussed establishing formal negotiating groups to set a "denuclearization process" and work out a time and location for a follow-up meeting to the first Trump-Kim summit in June.

Ms Nauert said Mr Pompeo "held productive discussions" with Kim.

"It's a long process", Pompeo told reporters.

Pompeo responded by saying that Washington and Beijing were stuck in a "fundamental disagreement" that he hoped they could make some progress on resolving.

Since Donald Trump and Kim Jong-un met in Singapore in June, US-North Korea relations have stalled.

"Together with Mike Pompeo, Kim Jong Un appreciated the positively developing situation on the Korean peninsula, explained in detail the proposals for solving the denuclearization issue and matters of concern of both sides and exchanged constructive opinions", KCNA said.

It added that the two sides agreed on holding working negotiations for the second North Korean-U.S. summit as early as possible.

Pompeo has repeatedly refused to discuss details of negotiations, including a USA position on North Korea's demand for a declared end to the Korean War and a proposal from Seoul for such a declaration to be accompanied by a shutdown of the North's main known nuclear facility. He and Biegun both said they expected meetings at the working level to begin soon and become quite frequent before the next summit.

"We are starting to see a first wave of actions we can take on all four pillars of the Singapore communique", said Biegun. DPRK is the acronym for the country's official name: Democratic People's Republic of Korea.

Before reporters were ushered from the room, Pompeo focused instead on what the two sides agreed on: the importance of denuclearizing of North Korea.

Pompeo's visit to Pyongyang marked the fourth of its kind.
