Missing Chinese actress Fan BingBing breaks silence over tax fraud

Rumors about the star's trouble began when she went silent on China's main microblogging service Weibo, where she has more than 62 million followers.

Fan, who has disappeared from the public eye since being accused of tax fraud by television presenter Cui Yong Yongyuan in June, was ordered to pay taxes and fines said to be in the nine-figure range by the nation's tax authorities.

Fan reportedly evaded $1.1 million (7.3 million yuan) in taxes by using a secret contract worth $2.9 million (20 million yuan) that she signed for starring in the Chinese film "Unbreakable Spirit".

Social media was awash with speculation over her whereabouts and whether she had been detained.

If Fan doesn't pay the fines within the prescribed time limit, she could face criminal charges.

Fan Bingbing is seen at the premiere of the film I Am Not Madame Bovary at the 2016 Toronto International Film Festival. She also has a role in the upcoming Bruce Willis-Adrien Brody feature Air Strike.

After June, when she posted her visit to a children's hospital on social media, she vanished from sight, to the dismay of her fans.

Her full statement is as follows: "Recently I have been enduring an unprecedented amount of pain, undergoing deep self-reflection and introspection".

"Without the good policies of the party [Communist Party of China] and the state, and without the love of the people, there would be no Fan Bingbing".

Adding to the intrigue of this mystery is the AP's note that Fan's agent is being held by police for allegedly obstructing the investigation.

The State Administration of Taxation (SAT) said companies and individuals in the industry who voluntarily "rectify their behavior" and pay back taxes evaded prior to December 31 will be exempt from administrative punishment and fines, Xinhua said.

"I know I've let down the country, betrayed society's trust in me, and let down my fans".

The Xinhua report makes it clear that Fan's case is a warning to other high-profile stars to get their tax bills straight.

Fan's disappearance coincided with a crackdown by Chinese authorities on high salaries for actors that can eat up much of the cost of a production.

The 36-year-old actress, model and producer had been a ubiquitous household name in China for years and tasted Hollywood success with a role in the 2014 blockbuster "X-Men: Days of Future Past".
