Abhilash Tomy, 39, suffered a serious back injury when his 10 metre vessel Thuriya was de-masted in extreme weather during the Golden Globe Race.

Thus began a wild weekend of race updates as organizers and rescue authorities scrambled to get aid to Tomy, who was situated roughly 1,900 miles southwest of Perth, Western Australia, when the accident unfurled.

Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman had tweeted on Sunday evening that Tomy would be rescued within 16 hours.

After boats from the French vessel managed to extract Tomy from his yacht, Indian reporter Shiv Aroor said the commander was "doing okay, conscious & in good spirits".

When a severe storm hit Commander Abhilash Tomy's yacht sometime on Friday, he must have been approximately 1,550 nautical miles (2,900 km) from land. "Continuous watch over the boat is being maintained by Indian Navy and RAAF aircraft till the rescue is completed", a note released earlier by the Indian Navy.

The Golden Globe Race is a 30,000 mile solo journey that sailors compete in without support from modern technology.
