Behind Isaac, Hurricane Helene is gaining strength, with wind speeds of over 105 miles per hour (170 kilometres per hour) as of Monday afternoon.

Hurricane Florence is rapidly intensifying and could strike a direct and risky blow anywhere from the Carolinas to the Mid-Atlantic region later this week, possibly as a fearsome category 4, forecasters said. The forecast continues to call for Florence to slam ashore as a major - Category 3 or stronger - storm before weakening slightly, but still as hurricane, as it heads inland.

The category 4 hurricane is now moving to the west at 13 miles per hour and is expected to begin a turn to the northwest by late Wednesday.

As of 11 a.m., Florence was centered about 580 miles south-southeast of Bermuda, moving west at 13 mph.

Hurricane Florence driving 'life-threatening' conditions toward East Coast
Loewenthal said the area should prepare to see impacts, including rough surf and risky rip currents, as early as Sunday. As of 11 a.m., Florence had a maximum wind speed of 115 miles per hour , bringing it to major hurricane status.

As Hurricane Florence approaches the East Coast of the United States, the governors of Virginia, North and SC have issued mandatory evacuation orders affecting hundreds of thousands of residents in coastal areas. The move will allow the state to use the National Guard for preparations and recovery if necessary. SC has been hit by three Category 4 storms: Hazel; Gracie, in 1959; and Hugo, in 1989.

Residents as far north as Virginia were warned that Florence could bring a life-threatening coastal storm surge, as well as inland flooding from "prolonged and exceptionally heavy rainfall", the NHC said. The rapidly growing hurricane-currently circling Bermuda-is expected to make contact with the East Coast early Thursday morning, predicted Wes Hohenstein, chief meteorologist at CBS 17.

It is too early to know the exact path the storm will take but it could hit land on Thursday, the centre added.

Hurricane Florence is forecast to make landfall later this week as a Category 3 storm with 115 miles per hour winds near Wilmington, North Carolina.

A mandatory evacuation order was issued noon Monday for North Carolina's Hatteras Island.

Governors in the Carolinas, Virginia and Maryland have declared emergencies. Locations that have been directly hit by a category 4 hurricane in the past have been uninhabitable for weeks. Ilija Cesal told the newspaper he wouldn't worry about buying extra water or other supplies for a few more days.

"Unfortunately we have some experience", Gamecocks athletic director Ray Tanner said Saturday.

Most of the projected paths show Florence making landfall in North Carolina. The state's emergency management division has posted additional information on the evacuations and how to prepare.

Trump says he doesn't talk the way Woodward portrays him
