Saudi Arabia rules out mediation in Canada row, mulls new measures

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia executed a man by crucifixion in the holy city of Mecca on Wednesday, while it was trying to attack Canada on its human rights record.

Some university professors expressed regret over the decision, but said they still supported Canadian government's position.

The report comes a day after the Toronto Stock Market saw a major selloff from an unknown worldwide dealer, in contrast to gains in other global markets.

The kingdom has suspended diplomatic ties as well as new investments with Canada after a Canadian call for the immediate release of an activist held in Riyadh.

The national Saudi Arabian airline, Saudia, said this week that it would suspend all flights between the country and Canada, starting next week. Saudi students studying in Canada now have the opportunity to transfer to 18 different countries to continue their studies "without being affected", Saudi Arabia's Deputy Minister of Education for Scholarship, General Supervisor of Cultural Attachés Jasser Al-Harbash told Al Arabiya English on Tuesday.

Responding to a question about the reason for the arrest of the activists, Jubeir repeated earlier allegations that they had been in touch with foreign entities.

Riyadh has also frozen student exchange programs and ordered about 15,000 Saudi students in Canadian schools and colleges to leave the country.

Saudi Arabia called that "unfortunate, reprehensible, and unacceptable in relations between states". The selling began on Tuesday, it said.
