The Michael Cohen tape, aired by CNN's Chris Cuomo, has very much put in play who said what to whom about a possible payoff to a former Playboy model and Rudy Giuliani's previous claim that the tape would vindicate the president.

Without any claim to attorney-client privilege, investigators - including those working on special counsel Robert Mueller's Russian Federation investigation - would have free reign to examine a slew of documents and tapes about Trump and Cohen's business dealings. So sad! Is this a first, never heard of it before? Trump on Wednesday suggested the tape was cut just as he was "presumably saying positive things", although there was no evidence of that.

The tape obtained by CNN was one of a number reportedly discovered during an Federal Bureau of Investigation raid on Mr Cohen's property earlier this year in NY. The former model said she had an affair with the now-president in 2006 around the time his son Barron was born.

She sold her story to the National Enquirer, signing a $150,000 agreement that gave the tabloid exclusive story rights and banned her from talking publicly about the alleged affair.

Ms McDougal reportedly received $150,000 (£115,000) from the Enquirer for her story.

Trump's lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, later disclosed the president reimbursed Cohen through a monthly retainer, but had not learned of the deal with the porn actress until later. Giuliani has said the payment was never made.

This statement makes it clear Trump is familiar with the matter and not learning for the first time of McDougal's allegation or the proposal to arrange a payment. Giuliani confirmed to NBC News that Trump's team waived the privilege protections over that recording. Weisselberg hasn't been charged with any wrongdoing.
