The smoke reached some 75 miles (120 km) south to San Francisco, leaving films of ash on cars and windows.

Reports on social media show ash falling in flakes in the Bay Area.

"What's unusual about this fire is really just the intensity of the fire at this particular point in the summer", Anthony said.

The fourth spot is held by the Missionary Ridge Fire, which ripped through 71,739 acres, also north of Durango.

"Usually with a fire we can chase it. we haven't been able to chase this because it keeps going in at least three different directions", Greer said.
