Apple finally lets United States callers share their location with 911


Apple stressed out that approximately 80 percent of emergency calls in the United States are now made from a mobile devices, however "outdated" framework has made it quite hard for 911 respond teams to quickly acquire a caller's location.

As Apple itself astutely observed, most 911 calls made these days come from mobile devices. RapidSOS support for iPhone will arrive alongside iOS 12 when the new software update drops this fall. Developers set prices for their own products, Apple says, and pay Apple a 30 percent fee for acting as their agents. "When every moment counts, these tools will help first responders reach our customers when they most need assistance".

Dispatchers will still ask callers the location of their emergency, but they'll be able to verify it faster, he said.

The tricky part isn't finding out where a caller is - Apple has been using its hybrid location technology since 2015 - but relaying that information to a fragmented and aging 911 system built for landlines. The feature can't be accessed for non-emergency calls.
